About us

Stockton Springs Historical Society (SSHS) is a non-profit organization with the goal of preservation and education of the town’s illustrious history for the benefit of our and future generations. The non-profit organization is staffed entirely by volunteer workers committed to the cause of preservation of past history as well as today’s events that will become tomorrow’s history.

SSHS visitor information

A SSHS volunteer is available during our open hours from May through early Fall and by appointment to provide a guided tour of the SSHS historical rooms and artifacts, to assist with looking up information about Stockton Springs, and to discuss the history of Stockton Springs with anyone who is interested. We post our open hours, which vary by month, on our blog and Facebook Page. You may also request an appointment by email sshs.history.me@gmail.com or leave a message for a SSHS member with the Library staff during open hours.

The 2024 schedule for open visiting hours at Stockton Springs Historical Society’s showroom on the second floor of the Colcord House have not been announced yet.

Local history museum

The Stockton Springs Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Stockton Springs, Maine. To this end, the society operates a local history museum. The museum is located within Colcord House. Open hours vary by volunteer staff availability and are posted on our blog and Facebook page. The museum is usually closed January through March.

SSHS archives and collections

Genealogical and local records

In addition to collecting information on the town’s history and the businesses of the past, SSHC collects genealogical information on the early families of the area. In addition to files for individual families, we have cemetery records, town vital records, and census records.

Our photo collection includes group photos of many school groups.

The Robert Carver Brooks Research Room

The Robert Carver Brooks Research Room is open whenever the library is open. Those interested in the history of the Revolution, maritime history or genealogy may be interested in the books available in the Research Room.

The Robert Carver Brooks Collection

Books, notebooks, journals, and pamphlets make up this collection that covers both genealogy and history. Many Maine towns are represented with copies of their vital records and town histories. We have Vol. 1 – 10 of the series Maine Families in 1790. The Bangor Historical Magazine, Maine Historical and Genealogical Recorder, and New Hampshire Genealogical Record, all reprinted in book form, are among the more general references.

There are books listing the soldiers and/or officers who served in several colonial wars. We have atlases for early American history and for both the Revolution and the Civil War. A number of genealogical journals are part of this collection as well as 23 notebooks containing photocopies of Bob’s research on various topics.

Most of the Robert Carver Brooks Collection is available whenever the community library, which shares our building, is open. We can be contacted through Facebook or through the above contacts. We gladly make appointments throughout the year and through the warmer months we are usually open once a week.
